Functional Areas of Business

The reason of functional areas in a business is to guarantee that significant business behavior is performed effectively and efficiently. These functional areas are crucial to a business if the business want to accomplish its goals. Specific areas are accountable for sustaining exact types, or aims, and objectives. For example, human resources and marketing are some of the sustaining areas. In this paper, a synopsis of the functional areas such as marketing and human resources will be discussed. Also a clarification of the responsibility of a manager in each functional area will be discussed.

Numerous companies support their organizational structures on diverse functional areas, creating departments around these functions and turning over tasks according to employees’ job designation and knowledge. A functional organizational configuration groups human resources by a variety of skills and capability, leading to superior effectiveness.

Four Functional Areas of Business

The four necessary functional areas of business are Human Resources, Marketing, Customer Service, and Accounting. To appreciate the functional areas of business one must comprehend each area and choose the route that best suits their individuality and job skills. The first area this paper will dwell into is Human Resources, also an essential part of any business, the Customer Service area. After reviewing those areas this document will gaze into the bottom line of a business and assess the Accounting area. To finish this paper the author will review what he believes to be one of the key areas to a business, marketing the product and services to gain revenue.

Human Resources Manager

The human resources or personnel division is accountable for hiring staff and ensuring that they get the appropriate training to carry out their duties. Human-resources directors or managers have workers fill out appropriate paperwork, including I-9 and W-4 forms. The W-4 form establishes how much is withheld from each employee’s salary; the I-9 or employment eligibility authentication form guarantee that a newly appointed employee can work officially in America (Suttle, 2009). Human-resources experts create pay scales for all staff, basing wages on equivalent compensation packages in the industry.

Beside their countless other task, the human resources staff also generate theories for escalating a business’s capacity to build steadfast associations with their staff.   Businesses need not only to acquire good talent, but they should be able to preserve that personnel and have an atmosphere where the workforce are devoted to their profession and believe there is room for escalation and progress (Suttle, 2009). A good human resources manager must be proficient in growing a company’s competitive edge by building its capability.

Customer Service Representative

Customer-service representatives answer calls or physical requirements from consumers. Some clientele may desire extra information about a merchandise or service; others have troubles associated to the goods they acquired. Customer-service managers prepare representatives on certain guidelines, such as managing reimbursements. Customer-service sections offer courtesy services to consumers, such as cashing checks, selling stamps, and accepting payments. Manufacturers, predominantly those that advertise technical products, frequently have numerous echelons of customer service, together with e-mail, phone, and technical support. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics a segment of customer-service representative’s job is to establish where to direct calls or inquiries (Suttle, 2009).

Accounting Department

Accounting experts typically work in one of three areas: payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Payroll specialists guarantee that employees are compensated on time and allocate annual W-2 and 1099 forms to staff and independent suppliers, respectively, for tax reasons (Suttle, 2009). Accounts-payable workforce follow payments that the business owes, plus amounts owed for components or to refurbish and preservation vendors. Accounts-receivable specialists follow the debts owed to the company. For example, consumers who buy items on credit descend within the area of accounts-receivable staff. These professionals organize and send statements to explain to patrons when payments are owed.

Marketing Professionals

One of the functional areas of business that the author would like to pursue is the marketing area of business. Marketing professionals decide the products that their businesses launch to the market, often using marketing research analysis to establish what patrons need and want (U.S. News and World Report, 2010). This helps the company to better support its approach. Marketing personnel help to institute cost for products, based on developmental costs. Marketing managers and directors make a decision that form of promotions and advertising their companies employ. Some marketing divisions have advertising directors or managers who handle these functions; they institute budgets for a diverse type of advertising, such as radio, television, and Internet ads, additionally, they track the outcome (U.S. News and World Report, 2010). The marketing section determines the accurate allocation conduit for the company’s products.

Conclusion

As previously stated, numerous companies support their organizational structures on diverse functional areas, creating departments around these functions and turning over tasks according to employees’ job designation and knowledge.
